Thaw Your Frozen Pipe in Toronto

The extreme cold in Toronto combined with wind chill creates a substantial risk for frozen or burst pipes. GS1 Plumbing is available to assist you 24/7 in Toronto and nearby areas with any kind of pipe damage.

During extremely cold weather, the freezing water turns to ice within the pipe, which in turn can expand and block the line. This blockage can cause pipe failure by creating excessive pressure throughout the system. The damage can occur in pipes made of plastic, copper, or steel. Frozen water pipes can cause severe damage to your property, leading to high repair costs.

Preventing Frozen Pipes

Tips to prevent frozen pipes:

Allow the heat from the room to circulate around uninsulated pipes by opening cabinet doors under sinks and in storage areas.
Overnight trickles of hot and cold water to drip overnight can help. Do not run the water into a drain line that is exposed to the extreme cold.
Ensure insulation of pipes in unheated areas or against uninsulated outside walls in garage and crawl spaces.
You can use heat tape or thermostat-controlled heat cables around pipes that are exposed and prone to freezing.
Ensure to turn on the heat in the building and set it no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

In case you still have a frozen pipe, try shutting off the water main leading into the structure to reduce pressure on frozen pipes and minimize flooding if the pipes burst. You can also use a hairdryer to thaw the ice blockage if the frozen pipe is exposed and visible.
